Spiral Spring

In this calculation, a spiral spring having an inner diameter D1, outer diameter D2 and made of a rectangular cross-section band with a width B and thickness t is considered. The number of coils of the spiral is n.

The spring is under a load F. As a result of calculations, the angle of rotation α of the outer end of the spring and the bending stress σ in the coils are determined. The total length of the band L is also calculated.

For the calculation, the elastic modulus E of the spring should be specified.

Torque:

M = F*D2 / 2;

Moment of inertia of strip:

Ix = B*t3 / 12;

Length of strip:

L = π*n*(D1 + D2) / 2;

Angle of twist:

α = [1.25*M*L / (E*I)]*(180 / π);

Bending stress:

σ = [2M*(t / 2)] / Ix
