Bracket Bolts Under Torsion Load

In this calculation, a bolted bracket fixed to the base with n bolts is considered. A load F is applied to the edge of the bracket at a distance L from the base in an arbitrary direction and in a plane perpendicular to the bolt axes.

The bracket is assumed to be absolutely rigid in the calculation. As a result of calculations, a load component FR of the total load acting on any fastening bolt is found. The load FR is determined by a distance A1 from the pivot point to the bolt axis, and an angle α between the line, perpendicular to the load action and the line, connecting the pivot point and calculated bolt.

For the calculation, the average distance A2 between the bolts and pivot point should be specified.

The calculation of tightening and stresses in bolts can be done here.

INITIAL DATA

L - Lever length;

A1 - Distance from the pivot point to the calculated bolt;

A2 - Average distance from the pivot point to the bolts.
A2 = ∑Ai / n;

α - Angle between the line, connecting the pivot point and calculated bolt and the line, perpendicular to the load direction;

n - Number of bolts;

F - Load.

RESULTS DATA

FR - Component of shear force on the calculated bolt.

BASIC FORMULAS

Approximately calculated force on a bolt from torque:

Ft = F*L*A1 / n*A22;

Vertical force on a bolt:

Fv = F / n;

Result force on a bolt:

FR = [(Ft*cosα + Fv)2 + (Ft*sinα)2]1/2
