Flange Connection Tightening Force

In flanged vessel and pipeline connections, the external load tends to open the joint of the parts. To fulfill the condition of joint non-opening, the tightening force of the connection should exceed the external load. The calculation of the connection for tightness depends on the rigidity of the fastened parts and the gasket, however, if a high accuracy of the calculation is not required, it is allowed to take a tightening force of the connection twice the external load.

In this calculation, a flanged connection with an internal diameter D, number of bolts n being under the action of a hydrostatic pressure P is considered. As a result of calculations, the tightening force Ft ensuring the tightness of the connection is determined.

The tightening torque of the thread can be calculated here.
