Shaft-to-Flat Connection

In this calculation, a shaft with flattened surface connection is considered. A shaft of diameter d, with a flat-end of length L and width h (look at figure) is under the action of torque T. As a result of calculations, crushing stress σ in the shaft end is determined.

Calculation of shaft-to-flat connection
Stress of shaft-to-flat connection

INITIAL DATA

d - Shaft diameter;

h - Size of the shaft at the connection place;

L - Connection length;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

σ - Crushing stress in the shaft.

Diameter (d)

Size (h)

Length (L)

Shaft torque (Т)

Crushing stress (σ)

BASIC FORMULAS

Crushing stress:

σ = 4T / (b*L*(b/3 + 0.15h));

b = ((D/2)2 - (h - D/2)2)1/2

INITIAL DATA

d - Shaft diameter;

h - Size of the shaft at the connection place;

L - Connection length;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

σ - Crushing stress in the shaft.
