Fluid Flow Under Surface Level

In this calculation, a fluid flow running through an hole with cross-sectional area A under the action of hydrostatic pressure from a reservoir with a fluid level above the hole h1 to a reservoir with a fluid level above the hole h2. As a result of calculation, the flow velocity W is determined according to the Torricelli formula:

W = μ*[2g(h1 - h2)] 1/2

μ - flow rate coefficient, depending on the nozzle type.

The flow rate Q is also calculated.

INITIAL DATA

h1 - Fluid level 1 above the hole;

h2 - Fluid level 2 above the hole;

A - Hole area.

RESULTS DATA

W - Average velocity of the flow;

Q - Volumetric flow rate.

Fluid level 1 (h1)

Fluid level 2 (h2)

Hole area (A)

Flow rate (W)

Volumetric flow rate (Q)

BASIC FORMULAS

Average flow velocity:

W = μ*[2g(h1 - h2)]0.5;

Volumetric flow rate:

Q = μ*A*[2g(h1 - h2)]0.5;

μ = 0.62 - flow rate coefficient for the hole.

INITIAL DATA

h1 - Fluid level 1 above the hole;

h2 - Fluid level 2 above the hole;

A - Hole area.

RESULTS DATA

W - Average velocity of the flow;

Q - Volumetric flow rate.
