Torsion of Bars Calculators

Torsion of a Thin-walled Open Tube

In this calculation, a thin circular open tube of length L, mean diameter D and thickness s is considered.

The tube is under torque T, applied to the end. Following the calculations, the total twist angle φ and the maximum shear stress τ in the section are determined. The shear stresses increas as the D/s ratio increases.

For the calculation, the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio ν of the bar should be specified.

BASIC FORMULAS

Shear stress and twist angle are determined by equations:

τ = T*(3π*D + 1,8s) / (π*D*s)2;

φ = TL / KG;

G - Shear modulus;

K = π*D*s3 / 3.
