Shaft Connections Calculators

Strength of a Pin Connection

Pin connections are used to connect parts that transmit relatively small loads. By shape, there are cylindrical pins installed with an interference fit and conical pins, which provide a detachable self-centering connection.

In this calculation, a connection of a shaft with a diameter D and a bush using pins with a diameter d is considered. The shaft is under the action of torque T.

As a result of calculations, the shear stress τ in the pins is determined.

Calculation of pin
Pin connection

INITIAL DATA

D - Shaft diameter;

d - Pin diameter;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

τ - Maximum shear stress in pin.

Shaft diameter (D)

Pin diameter (d)

Torque (Т)

Shear stress (τ)

BASIC FORMULAS

Shear stress:

τ = 4T / (π*d2*D).

Limit shear stress for pin:

[τ] = 70 ÷ 80 MPa.

INITIAL DATA

D - Shaft diameter;

d - Pin diameter;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

τ - Maximum shear stress in pin.
