Shaft Connections Calculators

Flange Connection

Shaft flange connections can be used in heavily loaded shaft lines, providing accurate alignment, but are too large as compared with other connections.

In this calculation, a flange connection of shafts with a diameter D1 and a flange diameter at holes D2 is considered. The flanges are interconnected by n bolts with a diameter d. The shaft is under the action of torque T.

As a result of calculations, the optimal bolt diameter dcalc is determined on the basis of the condition of equal strength of the bolts and the shaft. The shear stress τ in the bolts is determined.

INITIAL DATA

D1 - Shaft diameter;

D2 - Flange diameter by holes;

n - Number of bolts;

d - Diameter of the close-fit part of the bolt;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

dcalc - Calculated diameter of the close-fit part of the bolt by equal strength bolt and shaft condition;

τ - Maximum shear stress in bolts.

Shear stress (τ)

BASIC FORMULAS

Calculated diameter of close-fit part of bolt:

dcalc = [D13 / (2n*D2)]1/2;

Shear stress:

τ = 8T / (π*d2*D2*n).
