Shaft Connections Calculators

Strength of a Splined Connection

In this calculation, a splined connection with a length L, height H and width b at a shaft with a diameter D is considered. The shaft is under the action of torque T.

As a result of calculations, shear stress τ and crushing stress σcr in the splines are determined. For the calculation, the number of splines n should be specified.

Splined connection Calculation

INITIAL DATA

b - Splines width;

Н - Splines height;

L - Splines effective length;

n - Number of splines;

D - Shaft diameter;

T - Shaft torque.

RESULTS DATA

τ - Maximum shear stress in the splines;

σ - Maximum crushing stress in the splines.

Splines width (b)

Splines height (H)

Splines length (L)

Number of splines (n)

Shaft diameter (D)

Torque (Т)

Shear stress (τ)

Crushing stress (σcr)

BASIC FORMULAS

Shear stress:

τ = 2T / (0.7*b*n*L*D);

Crushing stress:

σcr = 2T / (0.7*H*n*L*D).

Limit shear stress for splines:

[τ] = (0.1 ÷ 0.2)σ02
