Cylindrical Block and Flat Plate Contact

In this calculation, a contact of the rigid cylindrical block with a diameter D, and a flat plate is considered.

The cylindrical block is under load F, which is transferred to the plate through the contact zone. As a result of calculations, the maximum stress σ, arisen on the border of the cylindrical block is determined, as well as the deformations Y of the plate in the direction of the load action.

For the calculation, the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio ν of the plate should be specified.

INITIAL DATA

Е - Young's modulus of the flat plate;

ν - Poisson ratio of the flat plate;

D - Cylinder diameter;

F - Load.

RESULTS DATA

σ - Maximum stress at the contact area (near the die edge);

Y - Total deformation at the contact area in the load direction.

BASIC FORMULAS

Stress at contact area:

σ = F / (0.22*π*D2);

Deformation:

Y = F(1 - ν2) / E*D
