Bolted Connection Tightening Force

In this calculation, a flanged connection of two parts with a number of bolts n subjected to an external load due to the tensile component FH and shear component FK is considered. As a result of calculations, the bolt tightening force Ft ensuring a tight connection is determined. The coefficient of friction μ at the parts contact point is taken equal to 0.15.

The tightening torque of the thread can be calculated here.

INITIAL DATA

FH - External tensile load;

Fk - External shear load;

n - Number of bolts in connection.

RESULTS DATA

Ft - Thread tightening force.

Tensile load (FH)

Shear load (Fk)

Number of bolts (n)

Tightening force (Ft)

BASIC FORMULAS

Tightening force for tensile load:

Ft = 2FH / n;

Tightening force for shear load:

Ft = 2[(Fk / 0.15) + FH] / n;

0.15 - Coefficient of friction.

INITIAL DATA

FH - External tensile load;

Fk - External shear load;

n - Number of bolts in connection.

RESULTS DATA

Ft - Thread tightening force.
